Homeopathy & Anxiety

What is anxiety?

It’s perfectly normal to feel anxious sometimes.  We’re hard wired to feel this rush of emotion, your body’s fight or flight response is automatic. It’s how we knew to stay alert and prepare for impending danger back in our cave man days.  The rush we feel is the release of adrenalin and cortisol, increasing our heart rate, our breathing, blood rushes to our limbs, preparing to fight or run away.

Typical situations in modern life that trigger anxiety are exam stress, public speaking or performing, sports competitions, deadlines at school or work, starting a new job or college.

Most of us experience this anxiety and as the stressful event passes our anxiety subsides.

For others it develops into a chronic state or there is a prolonged period of anxiety potentially leading to deeper disorders.  Often the fear is felt constantly or it prevents the person from doing certain things, avoiding social situations or developing phobias.

Homeopathy & Anxiety

There will be as many different reasons for an individual’s anxiety as there are remedies and approaches for dealing with it homeopathically.

One person may have rapid onset anxiety symptoms (panic attacks), however the cause of these may be a traumatic event in the patient’s past and the beauty of homeopathy is that this can address this too.  Another patient may have experienced a prolonged period of anxiety, caring for a loved one or a stressful time at work leading to a chronic state of fear and anxiety.

Some homeopathic remedies you may want to look into if anxiety is adversely affecting your life are: Aconite, Argentum Nitricum, Arsenicum Album and Gelsemium to name a few.

Looking at making dietary changes, assessing your alcohol and caffeine intake, gentle exercise or meditation, giving up smoking or drug use are all self-help strategies that may ease your anxiety.  If your anxiety or worries have become so great that they are affecting your daily life or they’re causing extreme distress then always seek help from your GP.

Some medical conditions can produce symptoms of anxiety so it’s always worth getting a check up and many offer Cognitive Behaviour Therapy as a treatment, medication is not always the first option.

Homeopathy can be used in conjunction with these, please get in touch to find out more.
