History

Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine founded by a German doctor by the name of Dr Samuel Hahnemann over 200 years ago.  He studied and practiced medicine and was fluent in numerous languages including English, French, Greek and Latin.

He became disillusioned with medical practices of his day and believed that these treatments were doing more harm than good.  He stopped practising after 3 years but needed to support his family so began translating medical and scientific books and papers to earn a living.

While translating a book by William Cullen he came across information on how Cinchona cured malaria.  He disagreed with the hypothesis in the book and decided to conduct an experiment on himself.  He took small amounts of cinchona and began to experience malaria-type symptoms of fever, thirst, drowsiness, palpitations, anxiety and muscle and joint pain.

He continued to experiment and eventually published his research introducing his concept of homeopathy to the world in 1807 and the principle of ‘like cures like’;  a substance that can produce a set of symptoms in a healthy individual, can treat a sick individual who is manifesting a similar set of symptoms.

Since then many more substances have been added to the homeopathic pharmacy, including remedies made from plants, minerals, animals and even disease products.
